Summary

This is only for a day hike. Typically, I do 3+ hour scrambles (i.e. steep hikes). This is NOT for an overnight camping trip.

Backpack

bottom: Just-in-case middle: Clothes top: Food
Toilet paper Scarf (optional) Lunch food
Tape & Band-aids Gloves *Gorp
Sunscreen Windbreaker Water (1-2L)
Mosquito repellent Gaters
Map (if GPS fails) Pouch (see below)

Pouch

  • Use Pouch to hold things on the way to/from the hike and during the hike
  • Use Change Bag to change into before and out of after the hike as necessary.

reading glasses (just in case) T-shirt (spare)
wallet: CC(!) and money Warm Sweater or sweatshirt (spare)

The night before:

  • check your car gas(!)
  • Pack everything
  • charge Phone(!) and GPS watch
  • Cut toenails - if you don't, on steep descents, your toenails may be stressed and get ripped off your toes.

On the day

1) Wear these 2) Before leaving home 3) After you arrive
*Pants Tape toes change into wool socks and hiking boots
T-shirt (Poly-pro) Go to bathroom save everything in the Change Bag, put it in the trunk
Pouch (see above) Double-check you got everything double-check you have your Pouch on you (outside the car)
Fleece Jacket Have a coffee! Eat breakfast double-check you have your car keys on you (outside the car)
Sunglasses lock the car
Watch put the car keys in the Pouch
Hat put the Pouch in the backpack in secure zippered(!) pocket.
Socks put on your sunglasses
Runners and go for the hike!
  • Shorts may be okay if it's warm and there are no bugs and no plants to walk through
